The Internet of Things Won't be for Everyone Until Hardware Companies and App Developers are Free to Innovate Warns Weaved

In Spite of Holiday Hype, Like Personal Computers and Mobile Phones, the Market Needs Freedom of Choice in Applications and Hardware to Flourish

PALO ALTO, CA – DECEMBER 10, 2014 – During this holiday season, the “airwaves” are being bombarded by advertising for the first generation of consumer “Internet of Things” (IoT) devices. But, the CEO of Weaved, Inc. (Palo Alto, CA) believes that the applications of IoT devices must be able to be defined by companies, developers, or even consumers who have good ideas. Until this happens, the market can't reach its potential.

Specifically, the first generation of IoT products have all been designed and offered by a number of companies that have applied substantial resources to an array of disciplines, including design, networking and other complex technologies, hardware design and manufacture, and more. But in order for the market to evolve, hardware vendors that can optimize hardware solutions and software developers who can imagine new applications must be enabled to succeed without having to master each other's disciplines.

“The real value of the Internet of Things will be realized when software developers can build applications without having to design hardware and vise-versa,” said Ryo Koyama, founder and CEO of Weaved. “For example, every smart phone ships with a camera, and because the hardware was open for application developers, Instagram and Snapchat were able to build entire ecosystems on top of multiple vendors' hardware. The Internet of Things needs a similar transformation before it can reach everyone.”

Koyama explained that for IoT to reach its real potential, a technology foundation needs to be available that encourages and supports the realization of many new products. This can only happen when an IoT fabric is agnostic about hardware and cloud technology; it needs to be software-based and provide networking and manufacturing solutions.

“With this model, it will be possible to create an entire application ecosystem that can benefit all users. It will take us into the next generation of the Internet of Things. And, like many technology markets before it – such as the personal computer and smart phone businesses -- this approach will dramatically increase both the utility and adoption of the Internet of things.”

The Weaved Fabric and Services

Weaved has designed an IoT fabric that makes the Internet of Things for Everyone possible. It eliminates the need for in–house expertise in networking, services, mobile, security, and firmware development. At the heart of the Weaved technology is a sophisticated software–defined networking fabric that can be used with any hardware product. This fabric employs two levels of secure IoT cloud networking service to allow users a variety of services and features. Direct network connections are peer–to–peer, encrypted, and each connection session is protected using a unique security key.

The Weaved Fabric is different from all other current IoT connectivity solutions which either rely on security–vulnerable port–forwarding or hub–and-spoke connectivity. The alternatives to Weaved both requires an always–on Internet connection and raises the privacy concern of running data through a third party server. Weaved's approach allows developers to choose to use standard TCP/IP connectivity, without concerns typically associated with remote connectivity. The open Weaved technology also allows developers the choice to avoid proprietary closed 'walled garden' approaches taken by closed platforms.

Weaved recently introduced its fabric to the Raspberry Pi community to start to introduce the Internet of things for Everyone. Over time, broader communities of individuals will be able to use Weaved to be limited only by their imagination for the Internet of Things.

About Weaved

Weaved is committed to the vision of making it possible for anyone to create their own Internet of Things applications, to realize the Internet of Things for Everyone. Today, the company offers a fully-capable, software-only, hardware-agnostic platform and drop-in services to easily enable sophisticated users and developers to add Internet of Things capability to any already networked products. Weaved was founded by a team of experienced entrepreneurs; one of their earlier companies, a networking company, was acquired by NVIDIA. Weaved is also a charter member of the All Seen Alliance, a non-profit consortium dedicated to enabling the Internet of Everything through a universal development framework. Weaved is based in Palo Alto, CA and is funded by CrunchFund (San Francisco), Metamorphic Ventures (New York), Core Ventures Group, Haystack, Double M Partners, TMT Investments, Maxfield Capital, Alpine Meridian, Ironfire Capital, Big Basin, HB Rama and others.
